Application Process

HECUA has two types of applications: one for programs abroad, and one for programs in the United States. Every part of HECUA’s application process for both types of programs can be completed online.

To begin an application, you need to create a user account on HECUA’s website, by clicking the Apply button on the top right hand side of the screen. After you’ve created an account, you’ll be guided through a series of steps. As you submit materials through the student portal, items will be checked off your application list. Here’s step-by-step guide to what you should expect during the application process for HECUA programs abroad and programs in the United States.

How to Apply to a HECUA program

Step 1: Create an account by clicking the Apply button in the top right corner of the site, and entering a username and email address. The site will generate a password for you and send it to your email. 

Step 2: Retrieve the password for your account from your email. Click the link in your email to access the Student Log In area.

Step 3: Complete your Student Profile. This is not your application. You’ll select the program you’re applying for and provide HECUA with basic information such as your address, college or university, major and minor, email address, and emergency contact.

Step 4: After you’ve completed your Student Profile, you’ll see a screen that shows your application status. This appears as a bulleted list at the top of the page. You’ll find the links you need to complete your application immediately below the list, under the heading “Things still to do to complete your application.” The first link will take you to the online application itself. Additional links offer directions for supplementary materials. 

Step 5: Complete your application. The applications for programs abroad and programs in the United States differ slightly in what materials are required. We’ve listed the materials you’ll need for both below. 

For a program abroad, you’ll need the following material and information:

  • Basic information about yourself and your academic plan.
  • Time to write essays related to program content and internships.
  • An email address for your academic reference (you will email them a link to the reference form).
  • An email address for your study abroad advisor (you will email them a link to the study abroad approval form).
  • A copy of your official transcript.

For a program in the United States, you’ll need the following material and information:

  • Basic information about yourself and your academic plan.
  • An email address for your off-campus study advisor (you will email them a link to the off-campus study approval form).
    • Note for University of MN students: The University of Minnesota Off-Campus Study Advisor is Raegan Jaeger. Call 612-626-2044 to make a university checklist appointment and be sure to forward the off-campus study approval form to jaege181@umn.com.
  • A copy of your unofficial transcript.

Step 6: Submit all of the required materials. If you are applying for a study abroad program, pay the application fee. Students applying to programs in the United States do not have to pay the application fee. If your school covers the application fee, please don’t pay it. Ask your study abroad advisor if this applies to you.

Note: Once you’ve submitted all components of your application, we ask for 2 weeks to review your application and notify you of your acceptance. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Study USA:

  • April 15th (Fall and Summer Programs)
  • December 1st (Spring Programs)

Study Abroad:

  • March 15th (Fall Programs)
  • November  1st (Spring and January Programs)
