“Destruction is a form of creation.” Sullivan uses this quote to describe the necessary factors that go into how nature thrives. At first glance, it seems so wrong to create destruction, why must the blueberry bush be burned after it is picked? In order to regulate and encourage healthy growth, heat needs to be applied. Being is more than thinking. Pay attention to how things feel, and connect with the body. We are taught “I think, therefore I am,” but minds are not separate from bodies. “I feel, therefore I am” is more apt. I feel guilty when my friends at the University of Minnesota ask about homework or midterms and I admit that I’m actually spending the next day paddling down the Mississippi River or learning about food justice on a farm. Amidst a year that continues to provide hurdles and tragedies, having the space for rest and transformative learning has been important.  Read More »

Part of the reason that I have found the Art for Social Change program to be so impactful is the ways that it has centered the processes of life through art making. It has artfully woven the aforementioned qualities of art into education. For instance, we practice movement art that allows us to connect mind and body. Read More »

In unprecedented times, HECUA continues to adapt and thrive. Coming in as a new student to HECUA’s Inequality in America Program, I had no expectations, especially during these times. However our first encounter set the tone for what to expect. For the first time ever, HECUA combined three of its programs, Inequality in America, Making Media Making Change and Environmental Justice, at an in person meeting at the Bdote of Fort Snelling.
