The following information is intended to assist students and advisors in the application and credit approval process for HECUA programs.

Total Credits

MUST provides 24 quarter credits. Courses and credits appear on the transcript as University of Minnesota residence credits and are included in GPA.

 

MUST is a 15-week program which runs September through mid-December. All credits are posted as fall quarter credits. (The program is full-time, so that it is not advisable to enroll in other U of M courses while enrolled in MUST.)

 

Major Credits and Liberal Education Requirements

Students from all majors are encouraged to participate in MUST. Approval for credit distribution in the major and/or electives is negotiated with the student's department advisor.

 

American Studies majors may use 16 of the 24 credits to fulfill their major. Students in Urban Studies, Sociology, and Individually Designed Interdepartmental Majors (IDIM) have also been able to use credits toward the major. If seeking major credit for the internship, criteria for the internship placement must be discussed with the major advisor.

Fees

$150 program fee - payable to the University of Minnesota; must accompany completed HECUA application form, to be submitted to Teresa Thomas-Carroll; non-refundable except in the case where the student is not accepted into the program

 

$50 application fee - payable to HECUA; must accompany completed HECUA application form; non-refundable.

 

$400 deposit - payable to HECUA upon acceptance into the program to hold your place (due April or earlier); non-refundable; credited toward comprehensive fee.

 

$4,950 (1998-99 fee) - payable to HECUA; balance of $4,550 due in July, upon receipt of invoice from HECUA.

 

Financial Aid

Most financial aid can be applied to the HECUA program fee, including both grants and loans.

 

A revised budget form for financial aid may be requested through the Office for Special Learning Opportunities for requesting a higher level of aid to cover the projected costs of MUST.

 

For information on arranging use of work study funds from your financial aid package for a possible paid MUST internship, contact Melissa Hoglund, Student Employment, 612/626-8608, [email protected]. (Requires that a portion of the wage be paid by the internship site.)

Registration

The U of M Office for Special Learning Opportunities will register students for MUST. (No additional registration required by the student.)

 

Campus Timeline

Students planning to apply for the MUST program are encouraged to contact the Office for Special Learning Opportunities (OSLO, 626-2044) by March 15 for an appointment to discuss the complete application process.

 

HECUA Deadline

Application for MUST, along with all required initial fees (see above), should be submitted to OSLO, which in turn will send it to the HECUA office by the HECUA April 15 deadline. Early application is encouraged. Applications are reviewed as they are received. Late applications are considered on a space available basis.

 

City Arts HECUA

Spring Semester (9/10/98)

 

The following information is intended to assist students and advisors in the distribution and approval of credits for participation in HECUA programs.

Total Credits

The City Arts program provides 24 quarter credits. Courses and credits appear on the transcript as University of Minnesota residence credits and are included in GPA.

 

CITY ARTS is a 15-week program which runs February through mid-May. This cuts across the winter and spring U of M academic quarters. U of M registration for CITY ARTS is consequently divided into 12 credits for winter quarter and 12 for spring quarter. (The program is full-time, so that it is not advisable to enroll in other U of M courses while enrolled in CITY ARTS.)

SAUS credits appear on the fall quarter transcript. CASLA and CILA credits are split 12 each on the winter quarter and spring quarter transcripts.

Students will complete an "Academic Planning for Study Abroad" form in consultation with their major advisor prior to departure. The completed form allows the student to be registered for courses and financial aid/STARS arrangements to be made.

 

Students are registered for a foreign study block of credit (FOST 3110, 24 credits) prior to departure. Upon completion of the program, a cancel/add process will change the foreign study block registration to U of M courses.
