Carleton College strives to be a collaborative community that encourages intellectual curiosity and learning of the highest quality. The College works to develop qualities of mind and character that prepare students to be citizens and leaders capable of finding solutions to local and global challenges. Over the decades, Carleton and HECUA have worked in tandem to challenge students to embrace and enter the world that surrounds them, participate in meaningful community building, and collaborate with peers, faculty and practitioners to be thoughtful and fully engaged learners and citizens.

Special services HECUA provides to the campus:
• Helena Kaufman was a visiting Fellow for Community Internships in Latin America and spent a week in Quito assessing the HECUA program and consulting with program faculty on student learning outcomes.
• HECUA Senior Program Director Phil Sandro presented the public lecture Many Children Left Behind: The Promise and Failure of the No Child Left Behind Policy as the capstone event for Carleton’s Civic Engagement Series.
• In collaboration with Off Campus Studies and the Political Science department, HECUA Program Director in Scandinavia presented a public lecture on Challenging Utopia: Nationalism and Cultural Diversity in Scandinavia.
• HECUA Program Director for Environmental Sustainability Julia Nerbonne participated in the Carleton public forum on the role of cultural identity in understanding environmental issues.
• Music department faculty collaborated with HECUA Program Director Bill Reichard and students in HECUA’s City Arts program to present In the Spirit of Black Mountain, a multi- and interdisciplinary concert the included a staging of John Cage’s Musicircus.

Application Process

To begin the application process, students must first consult with the Off-Campus Studies office. HECUA programs are Affiliated Programs at Carleton. This means HECUA is a Non-Carleton program and students are required to complete the Off-Campus Studies (OCS) Petition Form. This petition allows financial aid to transfer and ensures that students receive Carleton credit. Students can pick up a copy of this form from OCS in Leighton Hall.

In addition to the OCS process, students must complete a HECUA application as well. For information about available programs, HECUA requirements and fees, please contact the Off-Campus Studies office as well as your campus representative:
