Community Internships in Latin America (CILA)
Fall Semester


The following information is intended to assist students and advisors in the distribution and approval of credits for participation in HECUA programs. Contact HECUA Admissions with any questions (651/646-8832, 800/554-1089, [email protected]).

Total Credits
Each semester program provides 27 course credits. Credits and grades count towards graduation as general electives. However, they are not included in the GPA.

Distribution Requirements
Students who wish to apply some or all credits towards a distribution requirement must undertake a petition and approval process with the appropriate department/academic office.

Major Credits
Students from all majors are encouraged to participate in HECUA programs.

The following majors are a good fit with the Latin American programs:
Latin American Studies o Political Science o Sociology/Anthropology o Spanish Language

Majors that have participated include:
CILA: Biology o History o Latin American Studies o Sociology

Campus Deadlines
Students planning to study off campus fall semester in CILA must submit an OCS petition to the Carleton Off-Campus Studies Office by the third Thursday of spring term for permission to study off-campus fall semester.

(No additional registration is required at Carleton.)

HECUA Deadline
Applications for CILA are due in the HECUA office by March 15. Early application is encouraged, as the program may fill before the deadline. Applications are reviewed as they are received. Late applications are considered on a space available basis.
