Fall Semester

The following information is intended to assist students and advisors in the distribution and approval of credits for participation in HECUA programs. Contact HECUA Admissions with any questions (651/646-8832, 800/554-1089, [email protected]).

Total Credits
Each HECUA semester abroad provides 16 credits. Courses and credits appear on the transcript as Macalester credits and are included in GPA.

General Distribution Requirement
As part of the Macalester Study Away proposal process, you will be required to work with your faculty advisor and the chair of your department on the use of HECUA credits toward your major and toward general distribution requirements, to provide a clear indication of how the credits will work for you upon return to campus. (Final decision on approval for general distribution requirements comes from the Macalester registrar.)

Major Credits
Students from all majors are encouraged to participate in HECUA Latin America programs.

Majors that have participated in the Latin America programs and may have been able to apply a portion of the credit to their majors include:
CILA: History o Latin American Studies o Political Science o Psychology o Spanish o Urban Studies o Women’s Studies

Scholarships
Macalester students planning to study in Latin America may apply for the Gerdes Scholarship, which supports a one-month extension of independent study immediately following the semester abroad on a topic concerning social justice. For further information, contact Macalester’s International Center, 651/696-6310.
