Scandinavian Urban Studies Term (SUST)

Fall Semester

The following information is intended to assist students and advisors in the distribution and approval of credits for participation in HECUA programs. Contact HECUA Admissions with any questions (651/646-8832, 800/554-1089, [email protected]).

Total Credits

The Scandinavian Urban Studies Term (SUST) provides 16 credits. Courses and credits appear on the transcript as Macalester credits and are included in GPA.

General Distribution Requirement

As part of the Macalester Study Away proposal process, you will be required to work with your faculty advisor and the chair of your department on the use of SUST credits toward your major and toward general distribution requirements, to provide a clear indication of how the credits will work for you upon return to campus. (Final decision on approval for general distribution requirements comes from the Macalester registrar.)

Norwegian Language/Independent Study Project Options

Macalester study away policy states:

"If you do not already have proficiency in the native or predominant language of the country in which your program is based (equivalent to the successful completion of at least two years of college level study), you must take at least one course of language study per semester on the program. Such study must be at a level equal to or higher than the last level of study you completed in the language and constitute no more than half of your course load on the program unless special arrangements are made before departure with the Registrar, the International Center, and the appropriate language department. You should direct any questions about your course selections or language requirements to the Study Abroad Coordinator at the International Center."

This means that you must choose the Norwegian Language course option in SUST if you have not completed two years of Norwegian language previously. Students interested in studying Norwegian prior to enrollment in the SUST program may register through ACTC for Norwegian language courses offered at Augsburg College. (Students seeking an exception to this policy may contact the Macalester study away office. Note that there is a 30-hour Norwegian language non-credit mini-course required for all students choosing the Independent Study Project option.)
