Metro Urban Studies Term (MUST)

Fall Semester/Spring Semester

The following information is intended to assist students and advisors in the application and credit approval process for HECUA programs. Contact HECUA Admissions with any questions (651/646-8832, 800/554-1089, [email protected]).

Total Credits

MUST provides 16 semester credits. Courses and credits appear on the transcript as University of Minnesota residence credits and are included in GPA. The program is full-time, so it is not advisable to enroll in other U of M courses while enrolled in MUST.

Liberal Education Requirements

MUST has been approved to fulfill the following liberal education requirements:
- Social Sciences Core
- Cultural Diversity Theme

Major Credits and Registration

Students from all majors are encouraged to participate in MUST. Approval for credit distribution in the major and/or electives is negotiated with the student's department advisor.

American Studies majors may use 10 of the 16 credits to fulfill their major. Students in Urban Studies, Sociology, and Individually Designed Interdepartmental Majors (IDIM) have also been able to use credits toward the major. If seeking major credit for the internship, criteria for the internship placement must be discussed with the major advisor.

The U of M Career and Community Learning Center will register students for:
ID 3571 MUST: Reading Seminar (4 credits)
ID 3572 MUST: Field Seminar (4 credits)
ID 3573 MUST: Internship Seminar (8 credits)
(No additional registration is required by the student.)

Fees

$200 administrative fee - payable to the University of Minnesota; must accompany completed HECUA application form, to be submitted to Teresa Thomas-Carroll; non-refundable except in the case where the student is not accepted into the program.

$50 application fee - payable to HECUA; must accompany completed HECUA application form; non-refundable.

$400 deposit - payable to HECUA upon acceptance into the program to hold your place (due April or earlier for Fall program; due December or earlier for Spring program); non-refundable; credited toward comprehensive fee.

$4,700 - for Fall 2001 and Spring 2002 - (HECUA comprehensive semester fee of $5,100 minus $400 deposit) - you will be billed $4,700 by University of Minnesota Student Accounts Receivable in accordance with the regular U of M billing schedule.

Health Insurance — you are required to carry health insurance. If you do not have private health insurance, you must purchase health insurance from the U of M.

Financial Aid

Most financial aid can be applied to the HECUA program fee, including both grants and loans. This will be done via your student account at the U of M.

A revised budget form for financial aid may be requested through the Career and Community Learning Center for requesting a higher level of aid to cover the projected costs of MUST.

For information on arranging use of work-study funds from your financial aid package for a possible paid MUST internship, contact Junelle Moody, Student Employment, 612/626-8608, [email protected]. (Requires that a portion of the wage be paid by the internship site.)

Campus Timeline

Students planning to apply for the MUST Fall program are encouraged to contact the Career and Community Learning Center (612/626-2044) by March 15 for an appointment to discuss the complete application process; for Spring program by November 1.

HECUA Deadline

Application for MUST, along with all required initial fees (see above), should be submitted to the Career and Community Learning Center, which in turn will send it to the HECUA office for Fall semester by the HECUA April 15 deadline; for Spring semester by the HECUA December 1 deadline. Early application is encouraged as the program may fill before the deadline. Applications are reviewed as they are received. Late applications are considered on a space available basis.

City Arts

Spring Semester

The City Arts program provides 16 semester credits. Courses and credits appear on the transcript as University of Minnesota residence credits and are included in GPA. The program is full-time, so it is not advisable to enroll in other U of M courses while enrolled in CITY ARTS.

Students will complete an "Academic Planning for Study Abroad" form in consultation with their major advisor before departure. The completed form allows the student to be registered for courses and financial aid/STARS arrangements to be made.

Students are registered for a foreign study block of credit (FOST 3110, 16 credits) before departure. Upon completion of the program, a cancel/add process will change the foreign study block registration to U of M courses.
