Program: The Graduate Fellowship on Philanthropy and Human Rights offers 3 paid fellowships to graduate students of color studying in Minnesota. Graduate Scholars will have the unique opportunity to work part-time with the Otto Bremer Foundation for the duration of a year (with the option of a semester). Scholars will be awarded a $12,000 stipend or scholarship.

Purpose: The Graduate Fellowship on Philanthropy and Human Rights seeks to advance human rights through the nonprofit sector as well as provide graduate students learning experience in the field of philanthropy. The intent of the fellowship program is to increase scholarly research of the Otto Bremer Foundation's priorities and to increase representation of students of color who can offer such expertise.

Objectives: The Graduate Fellowship on Philanthropy and Human Rights seeks to foster an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural community of professionals and students committed to human rights. Students will be working at Otto Bremer Foundation on issues around human rights including social and economic justice, shelter and housing, civic engagement, health disparities and resources, or organizational effectiveness within nonprofits. Research on such focus-areas involves collaboration with local nonprofits and the community while integrating fellowship research with academic objectives. Accompanying seminars will meet with scholars, policy makers, and local human rights advocates addressing contemporary issues and developments around focus areas.

The Sponsors: The Graduate Fellowship, started in 2003, is funded by Otto Bremer Foundation and is coordinated by the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA).
