to Participate in Kettering Foundation Public Scholars Workshop
Nan
Kari and Phil Sandro will participate in a May 20-22 national,
working conference that will map higher educations efforts
in civic mission and will address strategies for cultural change.

Internship Program students hired, pre-internship seminar planned
HECUA
will meet with all of the PIP interns in early June, for a pre-internship
seminar that will help students prepare for a successful experience,
gain understanding of the non-profit sector, and meet one another
and HECUA staff. PIP grantors are pleased with the quality of applicants
and interns are eager to begin their internships.
Gathering
initiated by alumni invites former students to time of reflection
and networking
Alumni
of the MUST and City Arts programs organized and led a gathering
of Twin Cities program alumni in April. Participants explored issues
related to post-college decisions about jobs and community work,
and reflected on the meaning and impact of their HECUA experience.

to New Staff
Judy
Sharken Simon joined the HECUA staff in April in a new part-time
position of Assistant to the Director. She holds a M.A. in Human
Resource Development and has worked with the Wilder foundation for
15 years.

A monthly News Update
HECUA
Professional Education Workshop Series Slated for 2001-2002
Five workshops will be offered in the Twin Cities to provide
innovative learning experiences.
Themes will include: Public Art: Urban Spaces: Exploring
Sense of Place; City as Text; Designing experience-based learning
(one focused on urban education, the other on poverty and housing);
The City and the River: Navigating the Tributaries; Urban Environment:
Diversity as Resource.
Workshops are being promoted to faculty development directors,
faculty in our existing network, board members, new faculty contacts,
alumni and people within our expanding community network.

St.
Olaf Faculty Seminar Planned for August
Part of St. Olafs three-year project to create innovative
ways for students and faculty to explore issues of diversity within
the academic core of the curriculum.
8-10 St. Olaf faculty will familiarize themselves with community
resources while they design new interdisciplinary Freshman J-term
courses that include a two-week urban experience.
Workshop
on Experiential Education Provided for Williams College Faculty
Phil Sandro led a workshop on experiential education at Williams
College, sponsored by the Williams College Guadino Scholars Program.
Workshop was the result of the successful Williams J-term
course in Guatemala, co-led by Alberto Rivera and Williams College
professor Mark Reinhardt.

Foundation Awards HECUA Grant of $25,000 for Mississippi River Environmental
Teaching-Learning Initiative
Will support further development of a Twin Cities-based environmental
studies course focused on the upper Mississippi River basin and
related activities that will engage students, faculty and community
resource people.
Work on the project will begin this summer.

Paul Foundation Grant for Evaluation and Governance Projects
Special $10,000 grant from the Management Improvement Fund
of the Foundation to support non-profits seeking to make strategic
changes in their organizations
Grant will fund valuation and governance projects
Foundation saw particular appeal in HECUAs consortial
approach and the role HECUA can play in bringing resources to the
community

Says Farewell to Hamline, Move to New Office Complete
HECUA hosted a farewell reception at Hamline prior to our
move to new offices.
Dean Garvin Davenport wished HECUA well and expressed Hamlines
pleasure in being able to house HECUA over these past 25 years.
Amy Sunderland and Garry Hesser voiced HECUAs sincere
gratitude for Hamlines support and provision of space.

Staff to be Part of Collaboration for Teaching and Learning Summer
Institute
Nan Kari will serve as core faculty for the Collaborations
Summer Institute on Civic Engagement and Interdisciplinary Learning,
which brings together teams of faculty from across the Midwest.
HECUAs involvement is a result of our significant work
in interdisciplinary teaching-learning and our emphasis on preparing
students for active civic engagement.
