Program
* HECUA
was awarded a 3-year, $480,000 grant to operate the Partners Internship
Program, a summer paid-internship program for college students
promoting work in the non-profit sector in the upper Midwest
* Approximately
20 paid internships granted annually, more than 250 in 10-year
history of program
* Program
to be integrated into current HECUA experiential learning programs
that bridge gap between academia and the social challenges of
surrounding communities
* Program
to be fully operational by Spring/Summer of 2001
HECUA
workshop on Diversity and Democracy: Can it Work?
* June,
2000 workshop, designed and led by HECUA staff, included a "mobile
workshop" that guided participants in reading an urban landscape;
extended small group field experiences; and interaction with a
variety of community artists and organizers.
* Faculty,
staff and students from St. Olaf, Luther, Concordia-Moorhead,
and Gustavus Adolphus Colleges took up important questions of
diversity and higher education
* Part
of a Teagle-supported Lutheran Consortium project.
HECUA
partners with St. Olaf College in 2002 Diversity Initiative
-- developing interdisciplinary student seminar with an
off-campus experience
* With
grant support from the Hewlett Foundation, HECUA and St. Olaf
College will collaborate over the next three years to create innovative
ways for students and faculty to explore issues of diversity within
the academic core of the curriculum
* Goal
is to develop strategies that expand understandings of diversity
and integrate these strategies as learning resources
* HECUA
will work with St. Olaf on faculty development and curriculum
design that includes an intensive urban field experience
Williams
College collaborates with HECUA to design a January, 2001 course
in Guatemala
* A
faculty member of Williams College initiated contact with HECUA
to design a short-term program for Williams College students and
explore closer collaboration with HECUA* Students will examine
the realities of everyday Guatemalan life and critically reflect
on approaches to development in this culturally and socially diverse
country

selected because of its reputation for sound, innovative pedagogical
practice and its interesting work being done in Guatemala

growth plus the anticipated razing of our current building requires

force named to work with the staff and realtor in identifying
rental properties: Garry Hesser (board member, Augsburg College),
Margit Johnson (board member, Carleton College), and Paula Pentel
(SUST alum, now at University of Minnesota).

rental properties on the market in community locations due to
lack of on-campus options at member schools (though still open
to possibilities for on-campus space)
