- Amy Sunderland, HECUA Executive Director, traveled to Williams in September to help orient school to HECUA services and opportunities.

New semester program, Environmental Sustainability, to premiere Fall 2003
- Recommended by faculty and practioners based on project funded by McKnight Foundation during 2001-02, program focuses on social and economic, rural and urban views of the natural resources within the Upper Mississippi watershed and Great Lakes ecosystems.

- Student application deadline is April 15, 2003

Program Advisory Groups launched; provide member campus expanded opportunities for involvement in program development and delivery
- Advisors (member faculty) will serve as intellectual and pedagogical colleagues to program directors while contributing to planning for “Site of Activity” work — identifying ways for HECUA to be a greater resource to member institutions.
- Program Advisors will be asked for 2-3 year commitment involving e-mail and/or meetings, and the opportunity to serve as “working fellows” with direct involvement in the program.

Program Directors visit Twin Cities to expand contacts and promote programs

HECUA leads faculty workshops and new contract student programs — partnership gaining momentum
- Dr. Beverly Nagel, Carleton College, and Alberto Rivéra, Guatemala Program Director, have developed an intensive 2-week field experience in Guatemala that will focus on the roles community groups, local government and non-governmental organizations play in community development and cultural empowerment. This Guatemalan experience is designed to be a part of a series in Carleton’s social/anthropology and Latin American studies courses.
- William Reichard, City Arts Program Director, will lead College of St. Catherine faculty in a half-day mobile workshop to explore the uses and meanings of public art in urban settings.
- Global Search for Justice: Women and Work, College of St. Catherine faculty and students will spend 10 days in Ecuador on field experiences and homestays. This experience, embedded in a semester course, will provide deeper understanding of the economic and social realities of women in Ecuador.
- St. Olaf faculty participated in the second of three faculty development seminars with HECUA in August. Nine faculty members from a broad spectrum of disciplines connected with community resources in Twin Cities, explored the pedagogy and philosophy of experiential education, funded by Hewlett Foundation’s Pluralism and United Program. The seminar included field work on Lake Street, a mural tour with Juxtaposition Arts, meeting with Jane Addams School for Democracy staff.
- HECUA program directors Lorraine Heffernan and Bill Reichard, and Internship Coordinator Martha Malinski, led a seminar on “Service Learning for Social Justice” in Northern Ireland with a group of 16 faculty and administrators from Gustavus Adolphus College in August. Participants deepened their understanding of the country’s conflict while discussing pedagogy and practice of experiential learning.
