TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY:
• Trip to Guatemala is planned for June 5-13, 2004. Goal is to allow alumni and friends of HECUA to gain insight on the current issues of globalization and explore current social issues. Wellstone Action Civic Dialogue Project, a national reading and discussion of Conscience of a Liberal will be held Feb. 5.
Mi Cultura, Tu Cultura: Living and Learning in Multiple Cultures will bring together immigrants from Latin America and recent returnees from Latin America to discuss their experiences. The workshop will be held Feb. 6 & 7.
2nd Annual Workshop for Change – details still pending.

STAFF UPDATES:
• Mika Shiozawa has been hired as fellowship coordinator for the graduate fellowship with the Otto Bremer Foundation.
• Phil Sandro will speak at Macalester International Week Feb. 26 on “Questions of Immigration from Regional Perspectives.” Sandro has resumed his role as program director of Metro Urban Studies Term.
• Einar Vannebo, Scandinavia Urban Studies Term, University of Oslo, Norway will present “Peace Through Education: Reconciliation Projects for students from Conflict-Ridden Areas” at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum at St. Olaf College on Feb. 21.
• Christa Olson returns to teaching in City Arts after productive fall working on curriculum integration. She will continue to hold faculty meetings on member campuses to promote HECUA-campus curriculum connections.
• HECUA says Good Bye and Thank You to Joanna Kadi, Interim Program Director for Metro Urban Studies Term.
• Employment Anniversaries: Stephanie Clausen - 4 years, Jeri Lu Mattson, Bill Reichard and Michael Eaton - 3 years, Christa Olson, Jacquelyn Geier and Phil Hatlie - 2 years.


HECUA Names Jenny Keyser as Executive Director
Keyser was the Interim Director of the Children, Youth and Family Consortium at the University of Minnesota where she administered a consortium of university departments, community organizations, and nonprofit agencies that address health, education, and social policy issues. She has significant experience in areas vital to HECUA’s stability and growth including seven years with the Minnesota Humanities Commission. Keyser holds a Ph.D. and a M.A. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Her start date is February 18.

An Open House at HECUA will be held to welcome Keyser to the Consortium. Details will be announced soon.


STUDENT PROGRAM UPDATES:
- New Program Director for Northern Ireland Welcomes Students; Program May Be Integrated in University of Ulster International Learning Curriculum

Roisin (Raw-Sheen) McLaughlin, new Northern Ireland Program Director, holds a B.A. and a M.A. in Political Studies, with a focus on international relations, conflict intervention and human rights from Auckland University, New Zealand. She is completing a doctorate at Queens University in Belfast. McLaughlin worked at the One World Center, an organization working to reform and update curriculum and teacher training in Northern Ireland. She has also consulted at the UNESCO Centre and guest lectured in the HECUA program.

The HECUA program has been incorporated into a proposed concentration in international development at the University of Ulster. If it is accredited, their students may enroll in the HECUA program by Spring ‘07 and be eligible to attend HECUA programs around the world.

- Scandinavian Urban Studies Term Curriculum Takes Major Step Toward Integration
Phil Sandro, Interim Program Director for Fall ‘03, has implemented a new syllabus which includes volunteer experiences, significantly increased integration, and the beginning of an internship component.

- City Arts Focuses on HECUA Challenge to “Examine Pressing Issues”
Spring Term boasts a new City Arts curriculum that takes up the challenge to “address the most pressing issues of our time” by looking specifically at what is means to be “American” in art. The program will explore social and political roles of art over the last century, linking historical trends to current affairs and helping students to claim their own roles in making change. Classes will be at the Resource Center of the Americas (a long-time HECUA partner).


PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES:

College of St. Scholastica: Eleven faculty and staff participated in a three-day workshop in St. Paul on new models of teaching, learning and working with community with a focus on diversity and oppression and creating a welcoming environment at the College of St. Scholastica. A one-day follow-up workshop in Duluth is scheduled for Feb. 13th. The workshops are funded through the Bush Foundation.

- St. Olaf College
will offer its 4th Annual Faculty Development Workshop on “Teaching and Learning in the City” this summer. This program explores diversity issues and community partnership with faculty and administration.

FELLOWSHIP & INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
- Philanthropy & Human Rights Fellowship Applications Due

Applications for the Philanthropy & Human Rights Fellowship are due March 12 for $12,000/academic year fellowship working with the Otto Bremer Foundation on areas of foundation interest. Open to graduate students of color studying in Minnesota. One semester of fellowship is possible. An advisory committee comprised of representatives of Augsburg, Metro State, St. Kate's, MPCC, U of M, MnSCU, American Indian Policy Center & St. Thomas has been formed.

- Partners Internship Program Undergraduate Internships Announced; Apply Now
20 organizations have been selected for as Partners Internship sites for Summer ‘04. Grants distributed to organizations in MN, ND and WI. Students work full-time 10 weeks (400 hours). Wages at $8.75/hr paid by grant.

HECUA provides support and two seminars which frame the experience and make connections to social change. Students should apply directly to organizations by April 1. For a list of organizations click here. Contact Lauren Swanstrom (651/287-3305, [email protected]) for additional information.

ENROLLMENT NEWS:
During Fall ‘03 term, HECUA staff visited more than 200 classes. With the help of alumni, Recruitment & Student Services also held a whirlwind of fairs, info sessions and campus meetings. This amazing activity has resulted in stronger than ever enrollments especially for domestic programs.
