STUDENT PROGRAM UPDATES:
New Norway Program Director Announced; Strong Academic Ties to Scandinavia and Comparative European Politics

-In partnership with the University of Oslo International Summer School, HECUA has hired Timothy Szlachetko, Ph.D. as the new program director of the Scandinavian Urban Studies Term. Szlachetko completed a M.A. in Political Science and a Ph.D. in Comparative Welfare State Economics at the University of Melbourne and has research and work experience in three of the Scandinavian countries. For the past several years, he has worked as a senior social policy adviser to the Victorian Premier (the State of Victoria in Australia) advising on education, work force development and early childhood issues within a national and international context. Szlachetko has taught undergraduate courses in European Politics at the University of Melbourne and has a strong background in comparative European politics, as well as personal experience with international exchange programs and internships.

Ecuador Site to Offer Spring 2005 Community Internship Program
-In response to strong interest and enrollments, the Community Internships in Latin America program based in Quito will be offered in both Fall 2004 and Spring 2005!
-Several small changes will distinguish the spring program. Four semesters of college Spanish (or equivalent) is still required; however, the spring program will have additional support for students unsure of their Spanish language competency, including a Spanish language course as part of the curriculum and additional internship offerings. Home stays in Quito will be supplemented by extended indigenous family home stays in rural Ecuador.

HECUA to Discontinue Guatemala Semester Programs
-Due to declining enrollments, HECUA will close its semester programs in Guatemala in June 2004.
-We are grateful to our team of educators in Guatemala for their mentorship of more than 100 students since 1999 – in particular to program director Alberto Rivera. Alumni and colleagues are invited to send stories and greetings for compilation into a book of memories to commemorate Rivera’s long career with HECUA that began in 1982. Please send stories to Judy Sharken Simon at [email protected] by May 27.
-One strength of the Consortium is its ability to provide high-quality, community-based learning programs that meet curricular needs and address pressing human and social issues. To offer ideas for development of a new site, please contact Jacquelyn Geier, Director of Programs (651/287-3306, [email protected]).

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES:
Working for Change Helps Prepare Students for Future Careers
• HECUA, in partnership with the University of St. Thomas, Macalester College and St. Olaf College, held its second annual workshop on “Working for Change” April 17 and helped 50 students with skill-building and career exploration. The workshop built on the success of last year’s event with an expanded number of breakout sessions and an expanded day. Ten member colleges were represented. Nearly half the participants were HECUA alumni.
• 90% of the attendees felt the career building sessions were helpful to them in their future job searches, and 87% of the respondents felt that the topic sessions highlighted the diversity of work available in the nonprofit sector.
