HECUA Seeks to Help Fund Scholarships Through Headwaters Walk for Justice September 21
This event draws together grassroots organizations state-wide to raise money. Visit http://www.walkforjustice.org/ for more information or contact alumna Judy Sharken Simon ([email protected], 651/287-3307). There are several options to help benefit HECUA — participate by walking, raising pledges or making on-line contribution. Past walks have raised several thousand dollars for the scholarship fund.

Conference Presentations

-The National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) accepted three HECUA proposals for presentation at their national conference in Minneapolis in October. Sessions focus on vocation, civil rights curriculum, and the site of activity on the west side of St. Paul. Jacquelyn Geier and Sara Carpenter serve on the planning committee.
Resources
• New student materials will arrive on campus in early September. The new look resulted from student feedback and a market research project conducted by students at Gustavus Adolphus College.


Staff Updates
• Elizabeth Petheo, has been promoted to Director of Student Services & Recruitment.
• Sara Carpenter has been promoted to Program Associate. She will be an assistant instructor in the Metro Urban Studies Term. She will also continue to develop and facilitate workshops and new programs.
• Program Assistant, Jay Kim, started in July. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in Political Science, has extensive experience in the community and will assist with program development.
• Erin Dietrich has been hired as Assistant Instructor for Environment Program. She is in the Public Affairs Graduate program at the University of Minnesota and holds a B.S. in Natural Resources.
• Mara Patton, full-time summer intern and a City Arts alumna, is returning to campus as a HECUA-University of Minnesota student liaison.


Search Underway for HECUA Executive Director

Citing the occasion of completing ten years of leadership during which HECUA grew and thrived, Amy Sunderland resigned as Executive Director in May. A The committee will begin meeting in August to outline the hiring process, draft the job description and create the position announcement. If you have questions please contact the Chair of the Search Committee Margit Johnson ([email protected], 507-646-4031). The Search Committee includes both Board Representatives (Margit Johnson, Carleton College; Mary Wagner, College of St. Catherine; and Solveig Zempel, St. Olaf College) and staff members (William Reichard, Michael Eaton and Judy Sharken Simon).


Rose Brewer, University of MN, Named to Lead Civil Rights Movement January-Term Program
Dr. Brewer is a professor of African-American Studies and a Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor. Her areas of interest and research are the intersection of economy, culture and Black family life, Black women’s studies, race, class and gender, social transformation, and critical theory. She has also taught at the College of St. Catherine and holds a B.A. from Northeastern College and an M.A., and Ph.D. from Indiana University. This appointment exemplifies rotating leadership of short-term programs among consortium members.


Otto Bremer Foundation Endorses Continued Collaboration with HECUA – Funds Partners Internship Program (PIP) for Three More Years
The Foundation has granted $480,000 to fund PIP through Summer of 2006. To date the Otto Bremer Foundation has provided more than $1 million in grants to HECUA since 2001 to continue programs for civic engagement, student involvement and social justice.

Curriculum Integration Project In Motion
This project will identify how HECUA programs fulfill general education/major requirements on member campuses. Information will help students envision ways HECUA programs can assist in completing major/minor degrees and will provide faculty with a clear sense of the learning achieved on HECUA programs.


Partners Internship Program Interns Attend Two-Day Reflection Seminar at St. John’s University
Interns gave presentations, reflected on their work and learning and celebrated their accomplishments. Projects included starting a transitional housing shelter for domestic violence survivors, coordinating meetings on ending homelessness, creating a garden and curriculum for preschoolers, designing a Web site for a small theater organization, working with the Somali community on the issue of sexual violence, starting a campaign assistance project for female political candidates, and organizing the new Midtown Market in Minneapolis.


Philanthropy Fellows Announced
University of Minnesota students Ayana Weekley, Feminist Studies major working in area of health disparities within communities of color, and Circe Toruellas, Public Policy major working in area of organizational effectiveness, have been awarded Fellows Grants to work at the Otto Bremer Foundation fall semester.

HECUA Scholarship Recipients Named
Congratulations to Fall 2003 scholarship recipients Ellen Moore, College of St. Catherine and Marla Depew, Augsburg College for Community Internships in Latin America; Robby Schreiber, St. John’s University for Environmental Sustainability Semester; and Adam Leonard, St. John’s University for Metro Urban Studies Term.


First Annual Working for Change: Vocation, Careers and Social Justice Workshop Draws 50 Alumni
• Event at Macalester College held in late May provided informational sessions to help students sharpen job search skills and connect with alumni working in fields such as community and labor-organizing, adult education, youth work, domestic and international service, and the nonprofit sector. A second workshop will be held next year.

HECUA Metro Urban Studies Term Part of Carnegie Foundation Research Project
This project will research ways to engage students in the political process. HECUA is one of 25 courses & programs nation-wide selected to participate. Results of project will provide “tool kit” of resources for a new social justice/political engagement pedagogy to be disseminated around the country. Phil Sandro (Metro Urban Studies Program Director/Interim Scandinavia Studies Progam Director) attended a preparatory workshop in early June to kick off the 3-year research project. Joanna Kadi, Interim Metro Urban Studies Program Director) will implement the first phase of the research this Fall.
