RECOGNITION:
-Metro Urban Studies Program Director Phil Sandro celebrates a decade of service. For a closer look at Phil’s contributions click here.

-City Arts Program Director Bill Reichard’s poem, “On the Pontoon,” was featured on MPR/Garrison Keillor's "The Writers Almanac", Friday, July 23.

-Civil Rights Program Director Rose Brewer, received the UM Josie R. Johnson award for human rights and social justice.

-Board member Lisa Heldke was selected for the highest faculty honor at Gustavus Adolphus, the Edgar Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching.

-Board member Karen Vogel, was awarded Hamline’s highest honor, the Burton and Ruth Grimes Teacher of the Year Award.

-Former Board member and HECUA founder, Hamline University Professor Emeritus Don Irish is the recipient of the 2004 Award for Peace and Justice from the Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation.

-Three $500 scholarships were awarded to Fall ‘04 students – Heidi Christine, UM for Metro Urban Studies; and for Ecuador: Alexander Hindin, Hamline University and Emily Kolanko, UW-Madison


PRESENTATIONS:
- Bill Reichard will be one of the “featured facilitators” at Service-Learning In The Arts Conference in October. Presented by Campus Compact and HECUA at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. For more information visit www.mncampuscompact.org .

-Garry Hesser, Augsburg College, will present at the National Society for Experiential Education Midwest Regional Seminar in Minneapolis.

-Jacquelyn Geier, Martha Malinski, Roisin McLaughlin, and Martha Moscoso will offer a bilingual presentation on “Culturally Appropriate International Internships”at NSEE Conference in September in Florida.


STAFF UPDATES:
-Domestic program staff are now housed in the HECUA Offices. Many thanks to Walker Community Church for providing us with a program home the past three years. MUST program will meet at the Resource Center of the Americas.
-Michael Eaton has accepted a new position as Executive Director for the NCCA/National Model United Nations. A search is currently underway for his replacement.
-Elizabeth Petheo has left HECUA and is pursuing a Masters in Sustainable International Development at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
- Welcome to Tracey Tennyson, Program Assistant. Tracey will assist Jackie Geier and have primary support responsibility for the PIP and Civil Rights programs. She is a 2003 MUST alumna and a recent Hamline graduate who majored in Social Justice.
- Welcome to Alysha Boie, the new Program Outreach Assistant. She is a 2003 graduate of the University of St. Thomas and comes to us from Hope Community, a non-profit organization in South Minneapolis.

Martha Malinski – 5 years, Sara Carpenter – 4 years, David Holliday – 2 years, Julia Nerbonne– 1 year, and of course, Phil Sandro – 10 years.

ALUMNI NEWS:
Alumni Programs Reconnect Alumni with HECUA
-Abroad Program Directors Reception kicked off HECUA’s commitment to reconnect alumni to HECUA and improve our alumni relations. Fifteen attended July event which included an informal reception at Intermedia Arts, followed by group dinners for each program location at a local restaurant.
-Alumni solicitation has brought contributions of nearly $1,100. Response meets expectations for HECUA’s first foray into offering the opportunity to give financially to HECUA.
-Alumni travel programs launched with a trip to Guatemala in June 2004. Michael Eaton and Martha Malinski led a 10-day learning and travel excursion to Guatemala. Highlights included a site visit to Common Hope and discussions with local social justice activists. Upcoming travel programs for alumni (& friends) will be Northern Ireland 2005 and Norway 2006.

HECUA Receives Grant for Alumni Relations
- HECUA received an organizational effectiveness program grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation to strengthen its alumni relations and widen the circle of support for HECUA. Grant builds on our long-standing partnership with Bremer and will strengthen our organizational capacity in substantive ways.



STUDENT PROGRAM UPDATES:

HECUA Receives Grant for Environmental Sustainability Program
-
The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization awarded a grant to HECUA to support a water quality assessment project that will be conducted in this fall’s Environmental Sustainability program. This will allow HECUA students to work with community organizations in Minneapolis’ Longfellow community to understand attitudes and behaviors about pressing environmental issues, and make recommendations about future research and practice within the watershed.

Environmental Sustainability Program to House and Partner with Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.
• IATP and HECUA will host a brown bag lunch series that will meet select Mondays during October and November to discuss program topics. HECUA is looking for board and faculty to help promote speaker series.

Program Development Committee Formed to Investigate Potential Sites for Future
- Efforts have begun to locate new international program sites for the future. Stay tuned for exciting new possibilities.

HECUA Holds Retreat for Program Directors and Staff to Strengthen Connections Organization-Wide

-All abroad program directors – Talim Hossain (Bangladesh), Roisin McLaughlin (Northern Ireland), Tim Szlachetko (Norway), and Martha Moscoso (Ecuador) as well as Maria Arboleda (Academic Coordinator, Ecuador) were able to attend July retreat. Included was a session on mental health issues presented by member college professionals Trish LaPlante (Hamline), Barbara Benner (University of MN) and Steve O’Neill (St. Olaf College).

New Norway Programs Considered

-New Program Director Tim Szlachetko is working to develop new short-term or semester programs. Please contact him or Jacquelyn Geier, Director of Programs, (651/287-3306, [email protected]) with your ideas.

New Bangladesh 2006 Semester Program Under Development

-Program Director Talim Hossain and former Program Director Haroun Er Rashid visited the Twin Cities in the spring to discuss the elements of a semester program. Bangladesh Program Advisory Group has also been planning for the expansion which will include broadened field work and internship components. Documentation and approvals are now underway on member campuses and with HECUA’s partner, the Independent University of Bangladesh.



PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES:
Professional Education Programs to Focus on Diversity, Multi-Cultural Urban Experiences

- St. Olaf College Twin Cities Faculty Training, August 12-18, completed its fourth year. Participants focused on understanding issues of the Twin Cities particularly looking at issues of diversity and oppression utilizing the fundamentals of experiential education. Program participants intend to develop a cohort of St. Olaf staff who have attended this workshop over the past four years.
- Macalester College will offer a faculty program focused on incorporating multi-cultural urban experiences into the classroom with assistance from HECUA. The program (August 2005 & 2006) is funded by a multi-year Bush grant and is being developed by Macalester faculty Karin Aguilar-San Juan and Duchess Harris, and HECUA staff, Sara Carpenter.



FELLOWSHIP & INTERNSHIP NEWS:
Partners Internship Program 2004 Wraps Up with Internship Seminar on Summer Projects.
• PIP interns gave presentations on their work and reflected on what they have learned and accomplished including: trained 100+ volunteers to plant 150 trees, designed web site (www.hmonghail.org), curated an art exhibit, created a five-year restoration plan, coordinated five summer concerts, conducted interviews to compile testimonies for legislation on human rights and set-up an employment resource center.
