Macalester College is recognized for its special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. Macalester strives for excellence and opportunity in educating students and fosters student engagement in the diverse and vibrant urban communities that surround the college. As a founding member of HECUA, Macalester has helped shape the consortium's mission of social justice and focus on community-based learning in local, national, and international contexts.
Special services HECUA provides to the campus:
•HECUA served as the external evaluator for Macalester College’s Ford Foundation-funded Difficult Dialogues grant.
•HECUA was a partner in planning and conducting Macalester’s Bush Foundation-funded faculty seminars in urban, experiential learning. Those seminars have continued under the direction of Macalester faculty and administrators.
•The associate dean of Macalester's Institute for Global Citizenship joined HECUA staff and board members in co-presenting the session, “Place-based Learning Communities: Collaborations for Civic Engagement and Social Justice,” at the 2005 AAC&U conference on The Civic Engagement Imperative.
• Civil Rights Movement: History & Consequences - Professor of African American studies, Duchess Harris, collaborated with HECUA to offer a month-long study of civil rights movements that incorporated from Minneapolis to the Mississippi delta. The program was designed so that faculty from HECUA member colleges could take turns directing and teaching the program.
• J-Term in Ecuador — Macalester's Spanish Department approached HECUA to develop a January program that used innovative teaching methods to explore language and cultural studies and met the demands of the language requirement. The Ecuador program was designed to motivate students to continue beyond the requirement and increase enrollments in upper level offerings, majors/minors, and additional study abroad.
• Phil Sandro, HECUA Senior Program Director, provided workshops for Macalester faculty on the foundations of experiential education at faculty retreats, and he co-presented a panel with Macalester students for Macalester’s International Week.
• International Roundtables – HECUA provided guest speakers on Latin America environmental issues for Macalester Roundtables.
