Organization Description: Access Press is a monthly newspaper founded and run by people with disabilities. The paper exists to provide a forum for the diverse voices of people with disabilities in Minnesota, and to promote disability rights by providing coverage of important policy and legislative matters.

Internship Project: Evaluation and improvement of the current distribution system in the metropolitan area and greater Minnesota, and the addition of up to ten new distribution sites. The goal of this project is to reach more people with disabilities and to strengthen information exchanges between Access Press and local disability groups.

Qualifications: Ability to organize tasks and to communicate by phone, e-mail, and fax. Initiative, creativity, and flexibility. Preference will be given to students with disabilities, or to students experienced with disability issues and culture or other civil rights issues.

Organization Description: The Cable Natural History Museum is dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of nature by providing natural history education and interpretation while advocating environmental stewardship. This mission is fulfilled through preschool and K-6 programs, teacher training, internships, and publications.

Internship Project: Develop a Phenology Society through an active network of volunteers who study the annual recurrence of seasonal plant and animal phenomena. The project involves organizing volunteers, planning, writing and designing a newsletter, promoting the Society, and working with staff to create access to phenology data through the museum’s web site.

Qualifications: Computer literacy and interest in natural history, as well as strong communication skills and a sense of humor. Experience or interest in graphic design, photography, writing, and working with databases preferred.

Organization Description: With a mission to develop and enhance appreciation for the natural world, Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center (CNC) provides environmental education and outdoor experiences for visitors of all ages. CNC also offers 15 miles of hiking trails and a hands-on Interpretive Center.

Internship Project: Research, develop, and present plans for incorporating alternative energy practices into a new visitor center. Findings will be incorporated into the new building and serve as a model of environmentally sound and efficient practices for visitors.

Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to complete a project independently. Knowledge or interest in architecture, alternative energy, or structural or civil engineering preferred.

Organization Description: Serving low-income families, CHARISM seeks to create opportunities that increase strength, potential, and build self-sufficiency. Programs include job skills training, youth enrichment, and a cooperative food program as well as parenting, nutrition, and budgeting classes.

Internship Project: Develop and implement a summer youth enrichment program for at-risk, culturally diverse youth ages 6-18. Among the goals of the project are to build community, to help youth discover new interests and talents, and to strengthen their self-sufficiency and literacy skills.

Qualifications: Strong organizational and communication skills, computer knowledge, and appreciation of diverse cultures. Interest in working with at-risk youth and the ability to be a team player.


District 7 Planning Council

Organization Description: The District 7 Planning Council strives to conserve, foster, and restore the well being of its neighborhoods in St. Paul. Through community collaboration, the council organizes to address issues such as health and safety, physical environment, and economic resources of residents, area workers, and property owners.

Internship Project: Coordinate a campaign with the Saint Paul Neighborhood Energy Consortium (NEC) to increase participation in the local recycling program. This project will include community outreach to many residents who use English as a second language or come from cultures that are not accustomed to recycling. Work done will establish a model program to be used in the future as well as during the summer of 2002.

Qualifications: Strong written and verbal communication skills, basic knowledge of benefits associated with recycling, and interest in working with people who are diverse in culture, ethnicity, and language. Being bilingual (English/ Hmong or Spanish) is helpful, but not required.

Organization Description: The Great River Arts Association (GRAA) enriches the lives of central Minnesotans by supporting artists and arts organizations and by offering opportunities to the public to experience arts in the area. Examples of programs and services include summer concerts, a local art directory, two visual art galleries, and arts education in local schools.

Internship Project: Plan and implement community arts celebrations in six rural communities through the GRAA’s new summer program, Prevention and Education through the Arts for Kids (PEAK). Duties will also include serving as a liaison between visiting artists and the community and coordinating presentations in local venues.

Qualifications: Ability to work independently. Well developed skills in organization and communication. Interest in working with children as well as interest in the arts.

Organization Description: The Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches (GMCC) operates with a mission to mobilize 700 congregations and community organizations to serve human need and seek social justice. Programs range from Correctional Chaplaincy and Minnesota FoodShare to Project Restoration and Discover Learning Centers.

Internship Project: Develop educational material about recent immigrants to Minneapolis. This project includes the choice of an immigrant community in which to focus and immersion into the challenges of that community. The material will be utilized by the Urban Immersion Service Retreat Program, with goals to raise awareness among high school and college student participants to the issues of poverty and homelessness.

Qualifications: Strong interest in volunteerism, ability to relate to people of different cultures, and mature judgement. Ability to research and work independently, strong communication skills, computer literacy, and creativity.

Organization Description: The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) provides legal representation in immigration matters to low-income persons of all nationalities. The ICLM also seeks to provide outreach, education, and training to client, community, and professional groups.

Internship Project: Develop and promote educational materials for teachers and youth (grades 7-12) about the possibility of deportation when crimes are committed by immigrants. The materials will accompany a video and be used as a resource to reach youth that may be at risk without realizing the implications of crimes they might commit.

Qualifications: Ability to work independently and to communicate effectively. Creativity, organization, and eagerness to learn. A background in marketing and strong computer skills would be helpful.


Intermedia Arts

Organization Description: Located at an intersection of diverse neighborhoods and communities in Minneapolis, Intermedia Arts serves as a catalyst to build understanding among people through art. Youth and community arts education remains a strong focus of the work done at Intermedia Arts.

Internship Project: Assist nationally recognized artist Stephen Farley in a public art project called Favorite Places. The project will include working with10 local high school-age youth and 10 elders from a local senior center who will pair up to photograph city locations.

Qualifications: Strong organization and facilitation skills, as well as a strong desire to work with young people. Experience with photography, graphic design, or web site construction would be helpful.

Organization Description: In partnership with individuals, families, and organizations, Neighborhood House builds opportunities for vibrant, diverse communities. Work focuses on meeting essential human needs, fostering community engagement, and connecting people to additional community resources.

Internship Project: Design, develop, and implement a pilot technology curriculum to introduce the latest technological resources to youth that do not normally have access to computers. Youth in the program will then become resources for their families, creating access to the benefits of information technology.

Qualifications: Knowledge of networked iMac system and basic understanding of training style software. Desire to help children learn in a fun environment and willingness to work in a diverse population. Ability to create and document lesson plans.


North Dakota Art Gallery Association

Organization Description: The North Dakota Art Gallery Association (NDAGA) works to foster appreciation of the arts, organize a support network for rural and urban art communities, and sponsor cultural performances and fine arts exhibits. NDAGA recognizes and honors outstanding contemporary, folk, and traditional visual artists in North America.

Internship Project: Curate a traveling exhibition, collaborating with fourteen female artists during the creation of works for the exhibit. The project includes participating in an artists retreat and in an exhibition listserv as well as developing an online exhibition and planning a public opening event.

Qualifications: Strong communication and research skills, ability to work independently, and computer literacy. Experience with Quark, Microsoft Word, and FilemakerPro helpful. Ideal candidate will be an art major with a strong interest in arts management.


North Dakota Community Action Association

Internship Project: Develop and design a comprehensive resource manual on the process of expanding programs. The project includes research and interviews highlighting successful programs throughout NDCAA’s network. The manual will be available within the community action network and may be used to educate state, local, and national policymakers.

Qualifications: Sensitivity to low-income, elderly, and disabled persons. Strong oral and written communication skills, creativity, and independent thinking. Ability to travel occasionally and experience with word processing and publishing software. Background in education, social services, public relations, or marketing helpful.


Probstfield Farm Living History Foundation, Inc.

Organization Description: With a mission to conserve and interpret the pioneer heritage of the Randolph Probstfield Farm, the Probstfield Farm Living History Foundation promotes education for children and the general public through organizing student volunteers, developing local history curriculum, and through tours of the historical site.

Internship Project: Research and draft a structural and botanical inventory of trees in the Probstfield extended farmstead area. Trees will be identified, documented, and marked for future guided student walks. The project also includes writing and presenting recommendations for preserving tree resources, as well as the development of a teacher’s handbook to be utilized during tours of the site.

Qualifications: Strong research skills, and an interest in history. Major in natural or physical sciences, with interest in natural resources management or in working as an interpretive naturalist or park or forest ranger.

Organization Description: The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center (HHIC) seeks to enlighten and inspire the public by providing interpretation of Viking and local history as well as space for three to four exhibits each year. HHIC offers tours, lectures, and festivals, hosts residencies and performances, and provides educational services.

Internship Project: Develop teaching tools and learning activities for use in grades 4-8 before and after students’ visits to the Red River Valley Exhibit. The curriculum will enhance understanding of the region’s diverse history and cultural heritage, taking form in a workbook that contains activities and points to multi-media resources.

Qualifications: Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as self-motivation and computer literacy. Education major with some experience in writing lesson plans preferred.

Internship Project: Develop and manage a pilot project to reduce food and yard waste in the Seward neighborhood. The project involves outreach including developing articles, publications, and ads as well as home visits to educate and recruit households to join a new Seward Composting Club.

Qualifications: Excellent communication skills and interest in composting and broader environmental issues. Major in environment-related field (e.g. biology, botany, horticulture, ecology, environmental studies) preferred.


St. Paul Community GIS Consortium

Organization Description: The St. Paul Community GIS Consortium exists to develop GIS (geographic information systems) applications that will enhance the programs and services of member organizations. The consortium serves by providing data acquisition, project development, GIS education, project sharing, and organizational peer support.

Internship Project: Using 2000 census data, develop maps and a database as well as training on a census map server that will be tailored to consortium member needs. Consortium members will use the information for program planning and for educating policymakers to meet the needs of local residents.

Qualifications: Minimum of two GIS courses and a strong interest in learning about community uses of GIS information. Knowledge of ArcView software, GIS databases, mapping, and data manipulation preferred. Strong skills in organization, independent work, and in designing user-friendly maps and visual aids.

Organization Description: Trollwood Performing Arts School (TPAS) works to inspire its audiences and members by providing performing arts education, community arts and entertainment, and through appreciation of cultural diversity. TPAS’s summer program features intensive study for youth under the mentorship of more than 80 artists and technicians from around the country.

Internship Project: Develop a leadership skill-training program for the TPAS Youth Leadership Program and complementary training material for adult mentors. This project includes using feedback from former Youth Leaders as well as working with current participants to discover the challenges faced during the summer program.

Qualifications: Excellent skills in research, organization, and communication. Experience or interest in working with teenagers and the ability to lead group activities. Background in sociology, social work, psychology, or organizational management preferred.

Organization Description: The Washburn Child Guidance Center serves children with emotional and behavior problems, and children who are at risk of such problems and their families. Through its four sites, Washburn provides counseling, psychological assessments, parent education services, and outreach consultation services to schools and day cares.

Internship Project: Develop a system of evaluation for Washburn’s long-running internship program. The project will include developing and administering a measurement tool for evaluation, interviewing former interns, compiling data, and making recommendations based on the results of the evaluation.

Qualifications: Interest in children’s mental health issues and the ability to work both independently and in collaboration. Academic background in psychology, social work or related fields, with an interest in evaluation work.


White Earth Land Recovery Project

Organization Description: The White Earth Land Recovery Project (WELRP) works to recover the land base of the White Earth Indian Reservation while building a self-sustaining future for its people. The Mino-Miijim Good Food Program is a pilot program seeking to reduce the high level of diabetes among the reservation community by reintroducing traditional diet, exercise regimens, and a holistic approach to health.

Internship Project: Build on work being done in the Mino-Miijim Good Food Program. Work will include securing additional food production as needed, conducting interviews and evaluations with elders, and coordinating a meeting with the task force and individuals from the region. Housing is available to intern.

Qualifications: Background or interest in Native American culture, and environmental and health issues. Strong communication skills.

Organization Description: With a mission to promote respect and develop future leaders, Camp Sunrise provides a year-round youth development program focused on providing multicultural experiences and outdoor education for urban youth, 13-18 years old.

Internship Project: Design and complete an ecological survey of the land at Camp Sunrise and create a land management plan. The project includes leading workdays in which campers participate in the land surveying process and developing an in-service staff training and presentation of the land management options.

Qualifications: Major in biology, geography, forestry, or related majors. Interest in working with youth, and knowledge of exotic plant management and restoration/conservation biology. Skills in vegetation mapping.


Youth Service Bureau, Inc.

Organization Description: In collaboration with law enforcement, courts, schools, and community leaders, the Youth Service Bureau seeks to divert first offender youth from the formal court system, applying a restorative justice philosophy to prevent future misconduct.

Internship Project: Coordinate with youth and volunteer business leaders to initiate and implement three service project groups. Among the goals of each project include making amends for the youth’s crime, restoring loss to the victim, and providing personal development, closure, and community recognition for youth.

Qualifications: Good moral character, as verified by reference checks and background investigation, experience leading groups of young people, and confidence in working with challenging youth. Training or interest in restorative justice and experiential learning, as well as project management skills preferred.
