Organization Description: The mission of the Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota – North Dakota Chapter is to improve the lives of all individuals, families and care partners throughout their journey with Alzheimer’s and related diseases by providing leadership, support, education, advocacy and research. The Chapter offers services such as a 24 Hour Help Line, online resources, support groups, care consultation, and the Safe Return® program. The Chapter has six Regional Centers through the Minnesota/ North Dakota area.
Internship Project: Develop and Implement an education program targeted at law enforcement and emergency medical professionals to coincide with an awareness campaign for the community in an effort to increase registration in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Safe Return Program® and awareness of Chapter services.
Qualifications: Comfortable working with the public and public speaking. Organizational skills. Must be a “self starter”. Knowledge of Microsoft Office. Good written and oral communications skills. Public speaking ability. Knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias is preferred, but not required. Must have own transportation.

Organization Description: The Barnes County Historical Society’s mission is to educate through the preservation and protection of historical records, articles, and artifacts dealing with the history of Barnes County specifically and adjacent areas generally. It hosts one of the largest museums of its kind in the country, open 300 days a year with a free will admission serving approximately 13,000 visitors annually.
Internship Project: Assist in the creation of an exhibition examining ethnicity in Barnes County and the Sheyenne River Valley area of Southeastern ND. The exhibit will document the ethnic diversity of the region and how ethnic populations have changed over the years, particularly in respect to immigration, religion, and social customs. The exhibit will include text, photos, artifacts, and oral history interviews. The exhibit will be on display for over a year and will then be available as a traveling exhibit.
Qualifications: Excellent communication skills and experience conducing oral history interviews preferred. Competent research skills. Clear and consistent writing skills. Some artistic abilities to create informative and enjoyable exhibit. Good organization skills. Public relations/personal skills and the ability to work well with elderly people. Knowledge of computers with Windows 2000, Adobe, and Word. Public speaking experience preferred.

Organization Description: B&GCBA seeks to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. B&GCBA offers programs for youth aged six to eighteen that focus on character and leadership, education and career, heath and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreation.
Internship Project: Primary project: Development of a youth garden at the new B&GCBA facility. This garden will be used as an outdoor educational activity for B&GCBA youth during the summer of 2005 and beyond. Secondary project: completion of landscaping at same facility.
Qualifications: Willing to embrace the mission of the B&GCBA. Excellent communication skills and organizational skills. Enjoys working both independently and collaboratively with “self-starting” capabilities. Demonstrated experience and/or academic background in horticulture. Demonstrated experience in working with youth and adults. Leadership experience preferred. Preferred start date is the first week of June (or earlier) to accommodate growing season.

Organization Description: The Center for Homicide Research is a unique, volunteer driven, research and education organization addressing the issue of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) homicide. The mission of the Center for Homicide Research is to promote greater knowledge and understanding of the unique nature of GLBT homicide through sound empirical research, critical analysis, and effective community partnerships.
Internship Project: Assist in the completion of the GLBT homicide data for the upper Midwest, prepare an interim report on the existing data and develop a scholarly paper on analysis of this data for possible presentation at regional or national conferences This research and findings will be incorporated into the Center’s national database of GLBT homicides, and will be used to assist inactive and “cold cases” investigations, and in further analysis of the phenomenon of GLBT homicide.
Qualifications: Knowledge and understanding of research methodologies and GLBT culture and identity. Excellent research skills. Thorough. Well organized. Comfortable with public speaking. Possess problem-solving skills. Have professional appearance and be able to represent the organization in public. A student pursuing a degree in sociology, criminology, political sciences, law, or GLBT studies may be particularly suited for this internship. An understanding of violence and homicide issues, how these issues disproportionately affect disenfranchised people, and a familiarity with the law and hate crimes is desirable. Must be comfortable with the topic of homicide and death, and be willing and able to view written descriptions or photographs of homicide cases.

Organization Description: The mission of Free Arts for Abused Children of Minnesota is to bring the healing powers of artistic expression into the lives of abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. It is the only organization in Minnesota that specifically directs the healing effects of the arts to children ages 3-18, living in existing residential treatment centers, battered women’s shelters, and special circumstances educational environments such as therapeutic nursery schools.
Internship Project: Work with the program coordinator and local mosaic artist to coordinate the overall management of a summer mosaic tile project. The objective of this project is to create an installation that can be exhibited at a local Gallery and eventually installed on a wall of a partner facility.
Qualifications: An interest in arts education, social work, non-profit program development, and arts based community organizations. Must have strong communication skills, interest and experience in working within an art program. Detailed oriented. Reliable. Motivated to succeed. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Verbal/written communication skills. The ability to work without close supervision and take on a leadership role. College coursework recommended in Studio Arts, Art Education, Early Childhood Development, and/or Psychology.

Organization Description: The mission of HACER is to provide the Minnesota Latino Community the ability to create and control information about itself in order to effect institutional decisions and public policy. Based on this mission, HACER plays a key role as facilitator in collaborations among agencies that serve the Latino community.
Internship Project: To design and implement a comprehensive plan for strategically communicating our research projects to Latino audiences, policy makers and other relevant entities. Craft a communications plan to strategically circulate our newest publications statewide. Specific intern tasks include becoming familiar with the publications, identifying potential audiences and obtaining contact information that would include a roster of individuals and organizations from multiple sectors. Responsibilities include creating promotional communiqués, e.g. cover letters and press releases, that effectively reach targeted individuals and groups. Intern will have the opportunity to work on other projects as well.
Qualifications: Advanced Spanish-speaking ability and above average English writing skills are required. Preferred qualifications are marketing or communications coursework. The intern does not have to write in Spanish since there will be professional translator.

Organization Description: Highpoint Center for Printmaking is a young non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the art of printmaking. Highpoint’s goals are to provide educational programs, community access, and collaborative publishing opportunities to engage the community and increase the appreciation for and understanding of the printmaking arts.
Internship Project: Develop and implement Highpoint’s summer children’s programming. The intern will serves as an art teacher and lead a program called Culture Camp. The intern will be asked to write curriculum, teach simple printmaking lessons, support the kids during their creation of work, coordinate a guest appearance by a local youth book artist/illustrator, and organize an exhibition of the children’s artwork.
Qualifications: Some experience in studio art, as well as experience or interest in education and teaching. Comfortable in a leadership position. Interested in working with a diverse group of students. Flexible. Dependable. Punctual. Detail-oriented. Have a willingness to learn. Highly motivated. It is preferable but not a requirement that the intern has a basic knowledge of printmaking.

Organization Description: To assist tribes and individuals in the preservation, protection, and management of Indian lands that hold historical, cultural, spiritual and economic significance. ILTF supports its mission through long-term capital investments, focused grant making, and collaborations with those holding similar interest in Indian land tenure issues.
Internship Project: Work with ILTF’s Vice President of Grants and Programs on providing research and technical support for a recent grantee, the Grand Portage Band of Minnesota Chippewa (GPB). GPB will launch a Land History Information System that will include a development and construction guide for other tribes to consider for implementation, a user guide for tribal members, and a Tribal Land History Information model for other tribal land management programs.
Qualifications: Confident speaker and writer. Able to ask questions and listen respectfully. Background knowledge on Indian land history is not mandatory, but a desire to understand general historic relations between tribes and governments is encouraged. Data collection and basic research skills. Must be computer literate with basic Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet, search engines, and basic programming knowledge. Must be willing to travel and interact in new or different environments socially and culturally.

Organization Description: The mission of ISAW is to provide refugee and immigrant women and girls with access to opportunities that develop long-term self-sufficiency to improve the quality of life for themselves, their families and their communities. ISAW supports refugee/immigrant participants’ self-esteem, hope, and self-sufficiency. The agency’s goal is to empower refugee/immigrant women to adjust to new life and become self reliant and productive members of strong families and communities.
Internship Project: Complete a resource Center/Resource Bank to provide target population with increased access to resources, information, and services needed to achieve self-sufficiency. The Resource Bank will serve as an advocate, as education awareness to the larger community, and as a resource for sharing information and expertise with other community organizations. Train five immigrant students on how to navigate the system. Assist them in exploring and developing resources for themselves and their communities.
Qualifications: Two years of college level studies. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently. Excellent interpersonal, organizational writing, and computer skills, (Windows 98/Office and Excel 2000). Interest in working with diverse immigrant communities. Knowledge of community resources. Must have a vehicle and a valid drivers license.

Organization Description: The mission of Life’s Missing Link is to transform the lives of troubled youth and their families by providing heath realization training, case management, role modeling, and life skills training, which result in grater success in school, more stable families, healthier and safer, more supportive communities.
Internship Project: To develop and integrate a youth driven service-learning program (Youth for Justice) for 12 youth ages 12-17 who are in, or have completed out Truancy Intervention Program. The goals of this program are to increase youths understanding and use of Health Realization Skills and build upon their developmental assets to promote continued school attendance and truancy abatement. The program will involve group activities, group discussions, and three youth lead service learning projects.
Qualifications: Comfortable working with inner-city youth and diverse populations. Knowledge of youth development is a plus. Able to use group facilitating skills to effectively empower youth to create and direct their own group dynamics and projects. Able to research and network throughout the community for activities, presenters, and community service opportunities. Self-motivated. Organized. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Possess good writing, listening and communication skills. Be flexible, able to work independently and maintain client confidentiality. Open to leaning about Health Realization as an operating philosophy. Must pass criminal background check.

Organization Description: ME3’s mission is to lead the transition to a clean, efficient, and fair energy system. ME3’s ability to maintain and build broad, effective alliances has lead to the passage of policy initiatives that make good economic, labor, and environmental sense. ME3 core values are: integrity, fairness, excellence, respect for all people, environmental stewardship, and courageous passion for progress.
Internship Project: Work with the JustEnergy program to build the framework for a suburban energy justice network. The project would involve participation in suburban summer festivals, contacting religious organizations, identifying important suburban community institutions – and in general, building a base of suburban supporters that culminates in a newly formed suburban energy justice alliance network. The project will also involve reflecting on the experience of suburban organizing and making these reflections available to other community based organizations.
Qualifications: Interest in energy and justice issues. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with a diverse group of people. Ability to work independently.
Experience with Indigenous communities and/or suburban communities. Event organizing experience preferred.

Organization Description: The mission of Neighbors, Inc. is to provide neighborly assistance in an organized fashion, primarily through the use of volunteers. This is accomplished by providing a variety of programs such as: food and clothing distribution, an emergency cash assistance program, emotional and physical support programs, and transportation services. Neighbors, Inc. will be collaborating with an organization called Garlough/Covington Collaborative, an organization that seeks to coordinate community resources to support the students and families of Garlough School with a focus on those living in the Covington Court Apartment complex area.
Internship Project: Design and pilot an after-school program that will focus on computer literacy and using the computer as a tool for improving reading and math skills. The project will involve developing the program, piloting the program, and compiling a final report on the feasibility, necessity, and value of the program, including materials that would be required to implement a school-year long after-school program.
Qualifications: Excellent organizing skills. Comfortable initiating contact with others and building relationships with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Accomplishment oriented and a self-starter. An interest in youth and education. Better than average computer knowledge and skills, although technical shortcomings can be supplemented. Better than average writing and research skills. Proficiency in Spanish and English preferred but not required.

Organization Description: The mission of the NDCA WS / CASAND is to pursue and expose the cause of domestic violence and sexual violence, provide direct and immediate services to those who are victimized, and support those who provide such services. NDCA WS / CASAND is working towards the major social changes necessary to eliminate personal and societal violence against all people, increasing public awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault, and providing viable solutions to address issues of violence.
Internship Project: Revitalize the peer education program by revising the current student-training curriculum. Put together a Campus Organizing Resource Book to serve as a comprehensive resource directory of student organizing tools. Prepare a Judicial Affairs training Manual to assist student leaders in compelling campus administration to respond appropriately to reported incidents of violence and abuse.
Qualifications: Research, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Self-motivation. Strong oral and written communication skills. Participation and knowledge of student leadership would be a strong benefit. A background in violence against women is helpful, though a willingness and enthusiasm to learn is a great substitute.

Organization Description: Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society is committed to the development of a more sustainable society through the promotion of ecologically sound, socially just, and economically viable food systems. NPSAS’s work is centered on the Northern Plains region and is focused in three main areas: fostering more local/regional, secure and healthful food systems; increasing the diversity and sustainability of crop varieties adapted to sustainable and organic productions systems; and protecting sustainable/organic agriculture production systems and the ecology of the Northern Plains.
Internship Project: Work with the NPSAS program committee in the planning, program development, execution, and evaluation of the NPSAS Summer Symposium & Farm Tour. Work with NPSAS’s publicity committee to develop and execute an 8-week media campaign plan for the symposium, complete with special outputs, timelines and an evaluation plan.
Qualifications: A public relations background. Strong organization and communication skills. Demonstrated excellence in writing, and proficient computer skills. Experience in media relations, desktop publishing, editing, web site development, competence in Microsoft Word, Adobe PageMaker, and Adobe Page mill for Macintosh is preferred. Preference will be given to canidates with an agricultural background or knowledge of environmental issues.

Organization Description: The Northwood Humane Society aims to provide a sheltered environment for unwanted animals by working to find appropriate homes for animals, providing medical care as needed, and working to socialize and train the animals to increase their success in a home situation. NHS actively works to promote responsible pet ownership with an emphasis on the need for the spay and neutering of pets and humane care.
Internship Project: Design and structure a handbook for the volunteer component of the Northwoods Humane Society. This project will involve reviewing existing materials, and creating a database of all volunteers and members. The intern will become the coordinator of the junior volunteer program and participate in a variety of volunteer tasks to better understand the challenges faced by volunteers and volunteer coordinators. The final product will be presented in booklet form and on disk and will be made available to volunteers and shelter staff.
Qualifications: Respectful and comfortable with animals. Excellent organizational, verbal and people skills. The ability to give direction and training to volunteers. Good record keeping, research and writing skills. Must have a valid drivers license and a reliable vehicle. Intern should have no allergies to animals.

Organization Description: Planned Parenthood’s mission is affirming human rights to reproductive health and freedom. Planned Parenthood provides reproductive health care and medically accurate sexuality education to women, men and teens. The majority of these patients are at or below the poverty level, require substantial subsidy and have few or no other options for care. Planned Parenthood also engages in advocacy work educating the community about its mission.
Internship Project: Develop an outreach project involving local Hispanic/Latino communities and the social service and public health organizations serving them. Complete a business plan making Planned Parenthood’s Hispanic Clinic in Willmar more effective and operational. Assess how the clinic currently serves clients, the health care needs of Willmar’s Hispanic and Latino communities, and any opportunity to partner more fully with local organizations serving these populations. Produce a written plan for how to improve Willmar’s services to the Hispanic and Latino communities, recommendations on alternative methods for operating the Hispanic Clinic and the identification of funding sources.
Qualifications: Support Planned Parenthood’s mission. Strong communication, research and problem solving skills. Ability to network in the community and work independently. Creativity. Experience or course work in business or finance, and conducting outreach preferred. Bilingual Spanish/English and understanding of life in a conservative, rural Minnesota community also preferred.

This is achieved through various programs including: employment, housing and living facilities, and community service programs, Day reporting (serving as an alternative to incarceration), ReStore (a thrift store and training center for people with disabilities), Social Security and Internship Project: Formulate and implement a powerful marketing strategy that, aligned with a new location, would position the agency as a progressive, innovative organization that achieves results for youth and for people with disabilities and offers sub-contracting advantages to area contractors. The final product will be the launch of a multi-media marketing campaign comprised of radio, television, and print advertisements, pamphlets, brochures, and flyers, and website design that will increase visibility and awareness of RSI.
Qualifications: Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of communication principals, media, and marketing techniques. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate media activities and special events. Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials. Completion of three years towards a four-year degree in Marketing and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred.

Organization Description: Shalom Hill Farm educates and advocates in the areas of rural life and culture, as well as environmental stewardship. It also provides space for continuing education, meetings, conferences, as well as individual and group retreats. Shalom Hill works with institutions of higher learning throughout the United States and Canada. Shalom Hill also works to connect metropolitan youth to rural realities, food production and rural youth.
Internship Project: Oversee the completion of an environmental education trail on site and produce written interpretive material to be used with the trail. Upon completion, the trail will integrate a historic building site with our prairie restoration, organic gardening, and management projects in a continuous trail. The trail will include interpretive signage, seating, and access to US Fish and Wildlife prairie and wetland restorations.
Qualifications: Interpersonal skills including working cooperatively and communicating with others. A generally friendly demeanor and sense of humor is a plus. Prepared to work with others in a hospitable manner along with a willingness to join in. Willingness to work outdoors. Creativity. Ability to create interpretive materials that communicate, engage, and are accessible. Writing and presentation skills. Comfortable with using desktop publishing and digital photography equipment.

Women’s Cancer Resource Center (WCRC)

Organization Description: The Women’s Cancer Resource Center is a grassroots resource center where women with any type of cancer can find cancer information, support a wide range of resources that empower them to make informed decisions about their health. The mission of the WCRC is to “ Support women in taking charge of their cancer experience.”
Internship Project: Conduct extensive research on complementary and alternative treatment sources and produce a comprehensive 2005-2006 Holistic Health Directory. This project includes developing a survey, contacting practitioners that are currently listed, and expanding the listings to include new practitioners. The Directory will assist clients with information about other womens’s experiences, out comes, and testimonies. The intent is to provide women with resources for complimentary and alternative approaches, which will enhance their medical treatment.
Qualifications: Good verbal and communication skills, personal initiative. Comfortable with talking on the phone, proficient computer and Internet research skills. Ability to follow through and work independently. Individual with a willingness to assist staff and volunteers with other projects, as needed, is preferred. An interest in women’s issues, cancer, holistic healing and working in a feminist organization is also preferred.

Women’s Environmental Institute at Amador Hill (WEI)

Organization Descriptions: The Women’s Environmental Institute at Amador Hill is a place for women and allies to renew, learn, and organize for environmental justice. It is an environmental research, renewal, and retreat center designed to create and share knowledge about environmental issues and policies relevant to women, children and communities especially affected by environmental injustices; to promote organic and sustainable agriculture and skill building; and to promote activism that influences public policy and promotes social change.
Internship Project:Help develop the curriculum for eco-friendly organic farming classes and to assist with evaluation and planning for WEI to become a potential Community Supported Agricultural site for WEI members. Produce curriculum materials that help establish WEI at Amador Hill as a unique alternative farm campus that provides outreach and skill building in organic farming, gardening, and orcharding, with an emphasis on connecting urban and rural environmental justice policy and procedures.
Qualifications: Prefer an undergraduate in natural resources, sustainable agriculture, environmental studies, public health and /or women’s studies, with an interest in environmental issues and eco-friendly agricultural issues. Access to the University of Minnesota library and excellent web research skill are necessary.
