Sarah Minor, a senior at St. Olaf College with a double major in Art History and Studio Art, with a minor in Creative Writing, learned about Writing for Social Change through her creative nonfiction class at St. Olaf with Visiting Assistant Professor of English Kaethe Schwehn. "It seemed like the perfect melding of my interests in creative writing, visual art, and social activism," says Minor, who is applying to graduate schools to pursue a master's degree in creative writing.

Northern Ireland alum, Anne Reeder, who participated in HECUA’s Democracy and Social Change program this past spring 2008 is featured on Macalester College’s International Center Study Abroad website. Anne addresses questions related to her internship along with overall successes and challenges during her semester abroad with HECUA. She reflects that even now, “Northern Irish society is extremely complex and often the enormity of the complexities proved, and continue to prove, overwhelming.” The conflict is not over, yet, “...despite the setbacks posed by the 35-year conflict in Northern Ireland, people desire an end to violence.”
Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) picked up a story on local neighborhood activists in St. Paul calling on the MN Legislature and the governor to restore funding for the Central Corridor light rail project. A general rally was held April 17th on University Ave and a number of students from this spring’s Metro Urban Studies Term (MUST) helped increase visibility regarding the message to Gov. Tim Pawlenty: restore funding on the light rail project to ensure stops on University Ave. A number of students, including Erin Bitzan, Alicia Munson, and Randy Hade all from the University of St. Thomas, are featured in the foreground of the first photo in the MPR article. Rebecca Andert secured a paid internship with Minnesota’s Rice Lake site of Habitat for Humanity through HECUA's Partners Internship Program (PIP) this past summer ‘07. A Gustavus Adolphus College student, Rebecca applied for the internship position last March 2007 as any undergraduate currently enrolled in any Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin college or university, or HECUA consortium member school is eligible for participation in PIP.
In a Sunday, November 4th, issue of the New York Times, a special section Education Life featured articles on study abroad as the “new must-have experience.” HECUA is not mentioned by name, but one of our alums, Nicholas Christensen a Macalester College graduate, is featured as he went bungee jumping while studying on our Community Internships in Latin America (CILA) program based in Quito, Ecuador.

Amanda Lube, a student at Viterbo University participated in HECUA’s Metro Urban Studies Term (MUST) program, spring 2007. The Nov 14 article, "Are you politically smarter than a college student? Foundation has strategies to get students active," features the Carnegie Foundation study of political engagement among college students. The MUST program was included in that study. The newspaper picked up the Carnegie press release and called Viterbo to get in touch with a HECUA program participant.
