Intensive Spanish in the Field: January Term in Ecuador
Macalester College

Macalester's Spanish Department approached HECUA to offer a J-term as response to departmental and college interest in creative ways of addressing the language requirement. The course offered in January 2003 for the first time, was designed by Macalester faculty and a HECUA program director to blend language study and a “HECUA lab” for practice of skills and engagement with contemporary issues in Ecuador. By exposing students to relevant language and contemporary social issues, it is hoped that students will enroll in upper level offerings, become majors/minors and seek additional study abroad.
