Scholarship For Racial Justice Application

Scholarship for Racial Justice--$4,000

A central component of HECUA’s mission is to equip students with skills and knowledge for building just communities and democratic societies. In U.S. society, racial discrimination and concepts of race continue to shape power and privilege, including within institutions of higher education. The Scholarship for Racial Justice is one of HECUA's concrete commitments toward undoing institutionalized racism in higher education.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be students of color.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in one of HECUA’s member colleges/universities.
  • Applicants must have a completed program application on file for a semester-long domestic or international HECUA program (HECUA’s short-term programs are not eligible).

Scholarship Application Deadlines (all applications are due no later than 11:59PM Central Time on the dates below)

Faculty and staff nominations
Faculty and staff at member schools are encouraged to nominate students for this award. Please click here to complete the nomination online. A nomination is not required for students to apply, but helps to identify prospective students who are well suited for HECUA programs. Staff at HECUA will inform students of the nomination and encourage follow through on a scholarship application.

Required materials from the student:

1.) Scholarship for Racial Justice Application Form. Fill in the webform below.

2.) You will want to prepare ahead of time for the reflective essay responding to the following questions:

  • What personal, social, or political influences in your lifetime have motivated you to work on or be interested in racial justice issues?
  • Why/how does your passion around these issues lead you to being interested in HECUA’s mission and/or the specific program that you are applying for?

3.) A complete program application to one of HECUA’s semester-long programs must be on file at HECUA (no need to submit a second copy).

In the box below, please write one essay that responds to the following questions:
What personal, social, or political influences in your lifetime have motivated you to work on or be interested in racial justice issues?
Why/how does your passion around these issues lead you to being interested in HECUA’s mission and/or the specific program that you are applying for?
So that you do not lose your work if something goes wrong with this site, please write your essay in a word processing program, save it, and paste it in the box below. The essay is the central piece the scholarship committee looks at for this competitive scholarship; HECUA encourages you to have your essay reviewed by a writing center or academic advisor. The minimum length for your essay is 550 words; the maximum is 1,700 words.
You will be notified about the award in mid-December or mid-May, depending on the term for which you are applying.
