Traveler's Guide to Norway

What: Scandinavian Urban Studies Term is a fall semester study program in Norway, with travel study to Sweden or Denmark.

Hands-On Experience:
Seminars include a variety of experiential projects outside the classroom where you will interact with diverse groups ranging from politicians to immigrants. In addition to seminars and field excursions students spend four hours each week working with a variety of social welfare organizations.

When: mid-August to early December

Cost (2005): $15,300
($16,100 for non-member schools)

Comprehensive fee includes: Tuition, lodging, food, stipend, health insurance and field travel ground expenses.
Additional Expenses:
Include international and field trip airfare, books, passports and personal expenses. There is an $800 discount for students from members schools.

Prerequisites: Open to all majors. There is no language requirement. Of special interest to students in the social sciences, interdisciplinary majors and the humanities.

Seminars are taught in English. Electing to do an independent study project instead of language study may allow you to explore in-depth a topic of your choosing that is related to course themes and takes advantage of being “on site” in Norway.

Housing and meals: You will live in a student village near the campus and share living space with other Norwegian and foreign students. You will buy and cook your own food. A monthly food stipend is provided. Two home stays are arranged during the term: one weekend with a family in Oslo and an extended regional home stay with a study project. There may also be a home stay as part of the field trip to Sweden and Estonia.

CONTEMPORARY NORWAY:

A WINDOW TO YOUR OWN WORLD
Gain a deep understanding of contemporary Norway, using the welfare state and the notion of citizenship as the focus for investigation. Three interrelated seminars give you an understanding of how the welfare state works in the context of a social democracy facing challenges posed by immigration.

Explore the relationship between Scandinavian countries, the emerging democracies of Eastern Europe, the European Union and broader global politics. The option of Norwegian language study offers another opportunity to experience Norway’s culture. Seminars, lectures and readings are in English.

The countries of Scandinavia share a solid tradition of grassroots citizen participation, as well as state support of health care, education and economic security. Based in Oslo, Norway, a compact, increasingly diverse city nestled between the Oslo Fjord and mountains, the Scandinavian Urban Studies Term is associated with the University of Oslo. Classes will be held on campus, with comparative field study in selected regions of Norway, Sweden and Estonia. Opportunities for personal travel includes visiting other parts of Scandinavia and Europe during breaks and upon program completion.

For those with prior Norwegian language study, level of instruction will be by placement exam. Those interested in intense language learning should consider enrolling in the International Summer School in Oslo (www.uio.no/iss/iss) and then continuing study during the fall semester with HECUA.
