USA | Civil Rights Movement:
1 of 1 reflections

Before we left on our trip, Chuck McDew spoke with us about his experience working in the Civil Rights movement and with SNCC.
This was the first time I had actually heard someone tell their personal story about this time, and I was amazed at how deeply it touched me. I had read stories and watched movies telling peoples’ stories, but being removed like that always kept it from being real for me.

Talking with Chuck, I realized how his experience still shaped who he is today, and for him, this wasn’t a chapter in a history book, it was his life.

Throughout the trip, we spoke with people who were involved with the movement on many different levels and in many different aspects. We spoke with a couple who wrote songs and were involved with civil rights music, a woman who had walked across the Edward Peters Bridge on Bloody Sunday when she was eleven years old, a sanitation worker who was with Dr. King the day before he was killed, and many others.

Each of these people and their stories helped me to see how complex the movement was and how people are still affected by the times. Talking with individuals really opened my eyes to the people of the movement, instead of just seeing the movement as events in history.
